SAVE THE CHILDREN GLOBAL RACE FOR SURVIVAL
|
On 23rd day of
October 2013, children supported by Save Family Tanzania Charity joined 67
countries in the World Marathon Challenge, internationally themed SAVE THE
CHILDREN GLOBAL RACE FOR SURVIVAL. The Children’s Global Day of Action aimed at
calling the world to accelerate action for child mortalities especially those
caused by wars, diseases and malnutrition. Children were expected to do a
43.23km-distance relay race. The target was, of course, to beat the record set
by one Patrick Makau Musyoki, a Kenyan runner with undisputed reputation in his
world—marathon.
In Tanzania, the event took place in Morogoro and Arusha
Regions. The target group been school children and those children living under
difficult conditions. Morogoro-based Save Family Tanzania Charity organised
specifically for the later group. Here, 36 children aged between 11 and 13
years from different wards of the Municipal did a relay race. With batons passed
from one runner to the next, children raced around the football pitch of
Jamhuri Stadium. Four teams raced against each other and the message proclaimed
to the world by these competitive runners was palpably clear: nutrition is
necessary for children health and mental well-being. At the end of this event,
apart from getting children together, guide them in learning the ways of
marathon and the resultant pleasure; the following themes, inter alia, were
stressed:
- Significance of sports in education and children health
- Significance of balanced diet and nutrition to children
- Rights and responsibilities of every child in the community
- The necessity for children community to stand for their rights
